Founded in 2002 by Simone Nanetti, this is a small family owned winery in Montalcino, Italy. As a child Simone followed his father who was a cellarman in a large winery in Montalcino. At the age of fourteen Simone started working in the vineyards learning about the vines and growing season. It was there that he fell in love with Brunello di Montalcino and began the steps to start his own winery. The winery represents an ambitious project to produce wines they believe in. Simone works the land with such great passion and perseverance every day of every season waiting with endless patience as the fruit generates from early in the vineyard to the finished product.
It is this passion and love of the land and what it can produce that makes this winery so special. The name Cava D’ Onice translates to “Onyx Quarry”, as some of the early vines were planted near the quarry where onyx was mined to build the famous landmark abbey of Sant’Antimo, a UNESCO heritage site.
